Yesterday, an unexpected message popped up on my phone. It was from a Chinese exchange student we once hosted, telling me her mother was inviting my family to visit them in Nanjing, with all expenses paid. Naturally, I was ecstatic??raveling to China felt like a dream come true! This wasnt just random luck.
It was the result of years of actively engaging in life. Since 1997, my family and I have hosted fourteen exchange students. Its always been a way for us to connect globally and enrich our familys cultural perspective, even though it meant adjusting our lives and sometimes our budget to accommodate these young visitors. Our involvement in these exchanges is probably why we received such an incredible invitation.
This experience isnt just about hosting; its about opening our home and hearts to the world, which in turn, brings the world right back to us. Similarly, our familys tradition of hosting weekly board game nights has transformed our home into a vibrant hub of friendship and connection. Through these games, weve built a community that extends beyond the game table. Recently, one family from this group gifted us tango lessons for my husband and me.
This was a delightful surprise that came from simply providing a space for people to gather and share their love for games. These examples from my life reinforce a belief: the more you immerse yourself in life, the more life opens up to you. Its about doing more, engaging more, and being open to new experiences. What does doing more really mean?
It varies by person, but essentially, its about stepping out of your comfort zone to try new things. This could be volunteering, picking up a new hobby, or even starting a small side project. The key elements are that these activities should be challenging, exciting, and perhaps a bit intimidating. Heres why expanding your activities can lead to incredible opportunities: Expanding Networks: Every new activity brings new people into your life.
Visible Enthusiasm: When others see your zest for life, they are more likely to think of you when opportunities arise. Skill Development: Each new skill or hobby can turn into unexpected opportunities that you hadnt considered. If youre worried about the costs, remember, not all enriching activities need to break the bank. Volunteering, for instance, costs nothing but your time.
Starting a digital project can be as affordable as the cost of an internet connection. Even physical activities like preparing for a 5k can be cost-effective if you choose the right resources. But remember, this isnt about attaching your happiness to outcomes. Its about loving the process.
Train for a marathon because you love the challenge, not just the medal. Write because you enjoy expressing yourself, not only to get published. This mindset helps you enjoy the journey regardless of the destination. So today, why not start?
Is there something youve always wanted to try? Take the first step. Sign up for that class, join that group, or simply reach out to someone to start a new project. The point is to get moving and keep moving, and let lifes magic do the rest.
